Behavior & emotional regulation

Understanding meltdowns, shutdowns, and what helps.

If anyone is at risk of harm, call 911. For a mental health crisis in the U.S., call or text 988.

Behavior is often communication. Meltdowns and shutdowns are usually responses to overwhelm — sensory, emotional, or from unexpected change — rather than deliberate choices.

Looking for patterns in what happens before difficult moments, and reducing triggers where possible, are common starting points. Support should respect the person’s dignity and wellbeing.

Things to consider

  • Note what happened before, during, and after a difficult moment.
  • During a meltdown, focus on safety and reducing demands and stimulation.
  • Ask professionals about their approach and how they involve the autistic person.

Who to talk to

Your primary care provider, a licensed psychologist, or a mental health professional experienced with autism.
