Sensory & daily living

Sensory differences and everyday routines.

Many autistic people experience sound, light, touch, taste, smell, or movement differently — sometimes more intensely, sometimes less. Understanding someone’s sensory profile can make daily life more comfortable.

Small adjustments, such as quieter spaces, predictable routines, or advance notice of changes, often help. What works is individual.

Things to consider

  • Notice which settings feel overwhelming and which feel calming.
  • Ask the person directly when possible — they are the expert on their own experience.
  • Occupational therapists can help with sensory and daily living skills.

Who to talk to

An occupational therapist, through a referral from your primary care provider or school.
